United Nations official Professor James Anaya will hear about breaches of Maori rights at Waitangi tomorrow.
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Indigenous People's Rights, Professor James Anaya, will be at Waitangi tomorrow to hear about issues Tai Tokerau Maori believe may have breached their rights.
He looks at whether indigenous people's rights are being protected, investigates violations and recommends remedies.
The powhiri for Tai Tokerau will be held at Te Tii Marae at 8.30am and Professor Anaya will be welcomed at 10am.
His predecessor, former UN Special Rapporteur Rodolfo Stavenhagen, came to New Zealand in 2005 to look into claims that the Foreshore and Seabed Act breached Maori rights.
His report recommended repealing the Act.
Because of Professor Anaya's visit, the Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu Ngapuhi hui, scheduled to begin at the Te Kotahitanga Marae in Kaiho at 9.30am tomorrow, will begin at noon.
Ngapuhi hape are expected to make a special presentation to Professor Anaya at the hui.
