Lethal drugs in wrong hands - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2010

DANGEROUS: Pentobarbital and Ketamine - stolen drugs with the potential to kill.


Police have issued a public warning regarding the dangers of drugs used for animals after a Kaitaia veterinary clinic burglary.
Thieves broke into the premises of Top Vets in North Road, Kaitaia, in late July, taking several drugs including Pentobarbital and Ketamine. Thieves also broke into the drug cabinet at a vet clinic at Mangonui, but no drugs appear to have been taken.
Police are concerned that the Pentobarbital and Ketamine could be circulating in the community, warning that they have the potential to kill.
Pentobarbital is used for euthanasing large animals and as little as two millilitres will kill a person if ingested in any way. Ketamine, an anaesthetic, causes hallucinations and can lead to severe heart and breathing problems, and death. Switzer Home returns the favour - THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 2, 2010

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Mary Srhoj cuts the ribbon to officially open the Switzer Home's magnificent new wing, named in memory of her late husband who served the home's trust board for four decades. Looking on is current trust chairman Dr Tom Young, while general manager Jackie Simkins lends a hand.


Those who knew Millie Srhoj no doubt share the belief that there was nothing he would not have done to advance the best interests of Kaitaia's Switzer Home. There was, however, one point at which he drew the line.
Son Robert told Tuesday's standing-room-only gathering, for the official opening of the  magnificent new Millie Srhoj Wing, that his father had been passionate about the home.
"He was continually expounding the greatness of this establishment and its staff," he said, "but he was quite adamant that he did not wish to live here.
"He wanted to be in familiar surroundings with his family. And he didn't want to take a bed from someone...
